This isn't official, just based on the areas put up for lease by Weyerhauser.

Your map is pretty accurate. I looked the new LDWF map that was put out yesterday over pretty close. The only thing I see off hand that you don't have on your map is there is a small portion along the parish road, Brooks Chapel road, that runs kind of northwest out of Quitman that has also been removed, but it is so small and along the road that nobody would hardly notice it. I have a little local knowledge of it and knew to look for it. Saw a sign there awhile back where the timber company was selling it as lots for residential development. Otherwise I probably wouldn't have even noticed it. You are probably aware of this now since LDWF put out a new map along with the press release yesterday. Just passing this along in case you didn't notice it on the newly released map since this is your business and all. You and Mr. Mullins are right on the other recent JB WMA thread. It sucks that things are coming to this due to timber companies trying to max out profit and not be very concerned about community relations anymore. I know they need to make money, but it comes to a point where it really doesn't seem necessary, and the spin they tried to put on it when they were interviewed for the article you linked, well it left a bad taste in my mouth to say the least and to say it politely. And now it seems they are trying to use the good PR from working with WLF in the past to market what they are pulling out to lease. Makes me rather sick. The money they'll get for what they are pulling out of the WMA and leasing as hunting clubs is a drop in the bucket to a company that size. I really wish that LDWF could buy the place. Just hoping it doesn't get worse and they don't lose more leased WMAs. From what I hear the potential is there for this to happen more and more. Guess that is just the way the world works and a sign of the times, but it really does suck. Thanks for your support of the LA public hunting lands and the service you provide by making better maps than WLF can apparently make publicly available. You have a fine product that is worth the $$$!

La Pub Hunter,
Thanks for the heads up. We caught it, but it's always good to know ya'll have our back.

I understand the timber companies trying to make a buck, they're a business that's what they do. We as hunters need to stand up and band together at some point and quit screwing ourselves by constantly driving up the price of the land we hunt. I guess what I'm saying is there has to be a finite value for a given piece of hunting land and hopefully most of us recognize that. We'll never win in this situation as long as it's worth an extra dollar an acre to someone else to be able to keep you from getting a given lease. It'll just go on and on until ordinary people are priced out and it's truly a rich man's sport.

I figured you would notice it.

I've had this same discussion several times lately regarding the increasing lease fees. I agree. You hit the nail on the head with the concerns about the ever increasing prices hurting the majority of hunters in the long run. I hope it doesn't come to that, but it sure seems to be heading that direction faster and faster these days. I'll stick to what is left of the WMA in the case of JB. People often tell me the state has too many rules on wmas. In some cases maybe so, but all in all I prefer dealing with the wma rules and getting to hunt wherever I find sign and want to hunt, even with some extra competition, over paying to be on a lease and having to pay out the nose to be able to only hunt a very limited portion of what I would be paying to hunt on. On most hunting clubs the rules, in an attempt to cut out competition, seem to have led to people losing the abilities to truly scout and hunt like we used to be able to do, and still can do on public land. I hate to see the loss of hunting skills. I hope the trends turn around and hope the state can find ways to secure the leased wmas and pick up additional wmas if possible. Really wish they would make that a bigger priority but I guess it is what it is. I just try and support it as much as possible and hope for the best.
