Not quite a trophy but...
Went back to my favorite WMA on Wednesday, 1/4/12, and connected on a spike right after daylight. I had gotten set up on the edge of a timber thinning where there was a nuttall oak that was being torn up by both deer and hogs. I have had limited hunting time this year and was hoping to connect on the first legal animal that showed up. Not long after daylight I could hear an animal approaching from behind me along the edge of the slough that I had positioned myself overlooking. I turned slowly to see what it was and saw that it was a spike following the scent trail I had created on the walk in. He stopped just downwind of where the drag was hanging and just stood there looking around. He stood motionless for a good 10 minutes. He kept looking behind him like there may be more deer approaching but I never saw or heard anything else. I had made up my mind I was going to let him pass me by and draw on him after he passed for a good quartering away shot. Instead, after he was convinced there were no deer associated with the scent he followed in he began to make a turn to go back from whence he came. It was then that I made my move, I stood and drew on him. He was slightly quartering away at about 10 yds so I placed my 20 yd pin low on the last rib to account for the short distance. When I released I heard that tell tale sucking sound of a lung puncture and watched him as he ran off low to the ground. After a 40 yd dash he stopped, wobbled and crashed. Another effective sharkbite!!!!

Still, congrats on a great harvest. Meat in the freezer and that's what counts!

From this deer's condition, he was very skinny, I would say the rut has been going for a couple weeks. I haven't been in the woods enough to see any chasing. Since my trip to MO I have only been in a treestand on 2 separate occasions.

Nice buck! I would take him in a heartbeat and never stop smiling until it was time to start hunting for another one next season!

Sweet! Nice job, like many here have said any animal that you take fair chase is a trophy. Congrats!
