Deer disappeared mid-late October this year

Post by MNPaulC on Mon Jan 28, 2013 2:39 am

anyone find similar experience to mine this year--I have seen tons of deer this past summer and fall all the way up to mid October and then it was as if they dropped off the face of the Earth? Never saw any going to / from hunts. Never saw any while I was out--only saw 2 doe but both were too far away to get any kind of decent shot. Last year was fine, but have been seeing steady decline of sighted deer in pub hunting areas and more in city limits / housing areas. Reasons why? A fellow bow hunter of mine said he didn't see anything either, but said the farmers around the area we hunt were doing group hunts through the 50 acres, but that would have been slug season early Nov. Wouldn't explain the lack of deer seen before then unless they were going into the woods a lot before that...saw tire tracks going into field past "no motorized vehicles" sign? WTH? Has me baffled and looking for new area next year to go to. Find another honey hole less pressured. Can some areas be "dead" areas for a year or two and then pick up and get thick w/deer? Is there a cycle or something? Are they moving around more. There were deer in these areas, but they stayed nocturnal. I didn't go out there more than 1-2 times early season.

I did my hunting around Rush City and I seen the same thing happen. Right around the middle of October it was like they disappeared. As for areas going dead for a few years, that will definitely happen. Most dead areas are from hunters taking too many deer. A year or two passes without them getting anything and they move on to another spot. As the hunting pressure drops, the deer numbers will rise.

Lots of things contribute to this. Hunting pressure is a major factor.

Another is the dreaded "October Lull", when bachelor groups of bucks break up and establish territory, becoming much more nocturnal. They also begin actively seeking does that are not ready to breed, and this tends to drive the doe underground somewhat as well, trying to avoid the bucks. Food sources change around this time of year too, causing deer to alter travel routes and shift off of their late summer feed patterns.
