Deer Contest
Anybody thought about doing a deer contest for this forum? I'm in a few on other forums and its alot of fun. It might be a little late to organize for this year, or maybe not if enough are interested. 50 points for does and spikes, bucks are based on scored inches of bone. Have to post up two pictures of you and the deer with bow, and the deer must be taken on public land. If enough are interested we can even think about forming teams. Thoughts?

Re: Deer Contest
good deal. Here is the list:
1.Pineywoodsbow
2.Bowonly
3 NanookOdaNorth
Dave are you in?
The more the better so we can make teams. Rules are simple:
1) Deer has to be taken on public land with a bow(compound or Trad) no crossbows
2) two pictures of deer with bow and hunter posted on this thread
3) Deer has to be taken legally within shooting hours, without bait
4) Contest ends January 1, 30 minutes after shooting hours(I know seasons vary, but we got end it sometime )
5) Scoring is 50 points for does and spike, bucks scored with antler inches.
6) Person(or team) with highest points at the end of the season wins
Winnings can be whatever you guys think. A get together would be pretty hard to organize because of our distances, so for now maybe just bragging rights, or even a $10 gift certificate to a sporting goods store or something simple that can be mailed. let me know what you think.

Of course I'm in. Iron out the details into a final version and I'll post it up. "Whoever has the most fun wins!"

Here is a change to rule #2
Instead of a picture with us and the deer in it. How about a picture of the deer with bow and a set of car keys in the picture, since its hard for some of us to make that picture happen when we are alone on public land?

I know we have to come up with a concrete cutoff date but how bout extending it to Jan 31? Some of the best hunting in my part of LA begins in Jan.

Re: Deer Contest
Not usually big on contests, but sure, why not. As far as the picture, I don't think the hunter should need to be in it, lot's of guys are solo, and if the weather is warm sometimes there is not time to find a photographer. Some guys even quarter their deer if they are in deep, and pack it out in parts, so they would not be able to get a solo picture.
We need to go with a better scoring system for bucks. I think there would be too may arguments about inches. There's formal score, gross score, score with deductions, 60 day drying periods, and several different scoring systems. How about something like 50 points for does, and 50 (or whatever number) for bucks, plus number of points over 1 inch long. So a fork horn would be 54 points, an 8 point buck would give you a score of 58.

Re: Deer Contest
ok here are the rules thus far for the contest:
1) Deer has to be taken on public land with a bow(compound or Trad) no crossbows
2) Atleast one picture of deer with bow and set of keys in picture
3) Deer has to be taken legally within shooting hours, without bait
4) Contest ends January 31
5) Scoring is 50 points for does, 50 points for bucks plus number of antlered points over 1 inch long and additional points for inside spread over 13 inches. Button bucks worth 25 points.
6) Person(or team) with highest points at the end of the season wins
on the scoring for example an 8 point buck with a 14 1/2 inch inside spread would be 59 1/2 points.
Everyone good with these rules for the contest so we can finalize it?

Re: Deer Contest
Oh, one question and maybe I missed it being addressed above....are we going to limit the number of entries? I'm definitely not a numbers guy, but I would just like to be clear for all who will be participating. I also know that there are some here that are not able to hunt other states beside their own, which may limit their ability to enter several deer. Just a question.

Re: Deer Contest
Sounds fine with me. Let's make this interesting. Here's my offer. I will donate a $25 pre-paid card to Bass Pro, or a Visa or MasterCard (whatever they have available at the grocery next time I go, preferably Bass Pro if I can) and Mail it to Dave if he will administer the prize awarding at the end of the contest, and if others want to donate a prize of some sort, anything, grunt call, a Talk The Walk call??? or something of that nature that would be great! Of course, this would depend on Dave agreeing to oversee them being mailed out. He could PM or e-mail his mailing address privately to those wishing to donate a prize, and the most valuable donations, of course, would be offered as first second and third places if there are enough participants donating.

Yes limiting the number of entries is a good idea to make it fair. How about 4 deer per person can be entered?

Re: Deer Contest
I will donate a $25 prepaid card too. I have a Cabelas 10 minutes away, so I might get one from there.
Anyone wants to donate a prize just mail it to me. I will hold and send to the winners. Just add a note that it's for our contest.
Just FYI I will gladly participate, but I AM NOT eligible to win any prizes. Yall yahoos who have signed up to the forum, and share your time here is good enough for me.
I'll get it posted in the contest section.

Re: Deer Contest
Cool. Dave, I'll get that card and have it in the mail to you as soon as I get the chance. Now remember everyone, HAVE FUN One of the reasons I tend to shy away from contests like this is that there is always the possibility that someone will let ego take over just to be the winner, cheat, or hunt unethically. It's the world we live in, and we all know that some folks are just like that.
So remember, it's just a fun contest between friends, no real money involved. Just enjoy your time in the woods, hunt legally and safely. Good luck to everyone!

Re: Deer Contest
Hey Dave, they did have a $25 Bass Pro gift card at the store, I'll be mailing you that as one of the contest prizes, I'll have it in the mail this week.
One thing, how are we going to deal with button bucks? Maybe 25 points? Or just 0 ? I'm sure the issue will come up, might as well hash it out now.

Re: Deer Contest
I would vote to exclude button bucks, but I also have shot and I am not opposed to people shooting them if they choose to use their tag on them and they are legal. I have also shot a few by mistake since I've gotten older and my eyes are not what they used to be. Let's say 25 points for button bucks.
Re: Deer Contest
3rd. 25 points for button buck.

Re: Deer Contest
Ok I edited the rules above for button bucks. One thing we need to to consider are teams. They are alot of fun, but if most of the winnings are gift cards that would be hard to divide up between 3 men on a team, so we can do one of two things. Play individually, or play teams with cash as prize. Thoughts?

I like bragging rights as a prize. A forum I am a member of that is how they do it. Teams and winner has bragging rights for the year. But I do like cold hard cash

Also I will be at a disadvantage because I don't normally hunt public. If anyone on my team hunts public land in north bama and wants to show me around I will trade ya a hunt or two at my club in Madison county.

I think maybe just bragging rights would be fine for this year, being the season is already under way for a few of us. Teams are alot of fun. Maybe next year we can get serious about prizes

If I kill a deer on public land I will brag, I don't even need to win. That is one of my hunting goals.

Re: Deer Contest
Don't mind teams, not opposed to bragging rights either, but I already donated a $25 Bass Pro card, it's in the mail to Dave. We could just go with the team that takes first place gets the prize cards this year, and figure out a better system for the next contest? Or if anyone has a suggestion on a better division?
Re: Deer Contest
You could have Dave mail the card back to you, have teams, for bragging rights. Just a thought. What ever we do will be fine with me.
