One stick climbing method.
I have been playing around with using slings to climb. They worked ok for me, but I found using one LW stick is the route for me. Figured I would share this with you guys in case anyone is interested. I strap on the stick climb up to the top step then hook my tree strap around the tree. I adjust the tree strap as high as I can reach then hook into my rock climbing harness. Once this is done I can sit down in my harness & loosen the LW strap. I use one hand to hold the stick & the other to move the strap up the back side the tree. I'm able to advance it up the tree about 2'-3' each hook up. I repeat these step until I reach my desired height then set my stand below my tree strap & climb in. I also have a lineman's belt to navigate around limbs. This method takes a little longer to climb then using multiple sticks. But the benefits are - lightened my load by 5lbs., stable platform to hang stand, and no height limit. Here is a pic of the harness. I will also get a LW mini in the off season to use & knock off another 1.5lbs to my setup.

I got my son to shoot some footage with my phone. It not very good & it's rather large to post. I'll see if Dave can post the clip I sent him. It's about 30 secs. but I think you can get the idea.

Well, I dropped the ball here folks. I accidently deleted that email, along with 150 others. I hope he can find it, because it was a good clip.

Good clip, now that's a stretch. But it's the best I could do when my 8yr old camera man was ready to go throw the football instead of videoing.

The only real chance of dropping the stick is when unhooking completely to go around a limb. I always climb with my stand on my back so if by chance I dropped the stick I can hang the stand each time & move my harness down. If someone was worried about dropping the stick you could tie it off to yourself. I don't because it gets in the way & my fall back plan is the stand.

I've been tossing that idea around in my head also. I like the sling at to bottom to! Thanks for the video presentation.

No problem, I know the video is a little shakey if anyone has any questions just give me a hollar. I will probably switch to a sling when I get my G Web but I like the stability of the stick for hanging my Loc-on.

Can you describe the rope with the loop at the bottom of the stick? A pic with directions would be nice. : )

I use a str strap off a old safety harness, it has a loop on both ends & is adjustable. As you can see the small loop just slips over the v bracket.

I might go to my local rope dealer and have one made out of single webbing I need to get an idea of how long to make it looks like about 7 to 12 inches is that about close?

Mine is 30" total & hangs @ 28" below stick. You can easily make one from 1" climbing spec webbing by tying a water knot on one end to make a small loop. You would need 66" of webbing to make a 30" strap.

Re: One stick climbing method.
Cbigbear, have you tried this climbing method yet with the Guido's Web? I tried it yesterday and the tree fork on the web kept giving me fits. I wanted this method to work for me but I think it was a little too labor intensive and noisy for my liking. It was noisy because I was climbing a pine tree, which around here is what I hunt from 75% of the time. Since this was my first time ever trying this I'm sure with practice I could get better but I just don't have the time before our season starts.

Yes I use this method of climbing for both my stands. I position myself to the right of the stick. This keeps fork contact to a minimum. Pine trees are going to be noise because of the bark. Really the only thing you can do is go slow & be careful trying not to drag on the bark. For pines the strap method maybe better.

Yea, I need to make some straps and try that method as well. I recently bought 50 feet of 1" climb spec webbing so I definitely have enough to play around with.

Quick question - do you have to use the strap or can you just climb with the one lone wolf stick? I am 50 and need to go slow :-)

Re: One stick climbing method.
I tried this today in my guidos web. The web is in no way modified and I could not get the stick high enough to even need the strap on the bottom. I just stepped on the bottom step and climbed up. The harness he Is wearing seems much easier than in the web.

No need for the strap. It's added to gain height with every move, but not necessary.

To climb with the web using sticks isn't easy unless you modded the fork. Getting the fork out the way makes all the difference in the world. The harness is much easier to climb in - matter of fact I wear it when using the web just for climbing.

Re: One stick climbing method.
I think im just gonna eat the weight and climb with 4 lone wolf sticks and the guidos web. I am not man enough for the one stick or the strap methods. The one strap method is just to slow and I am not cooridinated enough to get my feet in the loop. These are all ingenious ideas and I applaud the guys that came up with and use them but I personally am just going for 4 sticks.
