2013 Turkey Season Approaching
So there hasn't been much happening on here lately. I thought I'd try to start a discussion on the upcoming turkey hunting season. Who is turkey hunting? When is your season?
I have an archery only tag here in Iowa. It allows me to hunt all 4 season here from mid April to later in May. I'm pretty excited about it. I know it will be tough hunting, but I'm looking forward to getting back out in the field. I have several good locations scouted. I am also going to scout for deer while turkey hunting. Most of the good public land in my area is pretty rough/hilly terrain (at least for Iowa). I'm hoping to put a lot of miles on my boots and get back into some of the bigger areas.

It is coming fast for sure! May 1st in New york. I might only have 2-3 days out of the month to hunt em so will probably go with shotgun.

Re: 2013 Turkey Season Approaching
I live for the spring turkey season. The reason I don't discuss it much on here though, isn't because I don't hunt them on public lands. I frequent public areas and usually do fairly well. But I decided years ago after a brief journey bowhunting them that I liked not only to hunt them, but to eat them as well. So I pretty much use my shotgun when I'm going after gobblers.
Funny story though. I was bowhunting this one area, without much luck. I hunted this bird for a week straight, never getting a shot at him, and only having him come in once, and he moved through at 40 yards never really offering a shot the one day he did come in. Being that I only had a few days left to hunt birds that year, I took the shotgun the next day. Well, not only did he come in, and strut, at ten yards, I had to wait to shoot him for a few minute because he turned his back to me while strutting for quite some time. I could have easily drawn and drilled him.
Such is the game I guess.

Wow, that sounds like a great experience. I agree with you. There is nothing like a gobbling turkey 30 yards in front of you. I will hunt some with a gun too, but mostly with a bow. When are your seasons in Maryland? I see your from Maryland so I'm assuming thats where you'll be hunting.

Yes, Maryland comes in on April 18, and runs through May 23 (I think, not positive on the end date). I'm going to miss the opener here though, we will be out of state hunting merriams out west.
I do a lot more out of state turkey hunting than I do for deer. Less gear to travel with, and easier to get the game home when you are successful. Hunt Virginia some, just because they are close, and have hunted Florida also. This will be our first year out west.

Where are you going out West (what state, public/private)? I've heard Merriam's are a ton of fun to hunt. I'm hunting Iowa and Minnesota and hunting a mix of public and private.

Colorado.
I know thats more of an elk, mule deer type destination, but the wife won us a place to stay out there for a week in a contest, and I wanted to do some hunting. With big game being draw tags, and turkey being OTC tags, and the time I had available to go being in the spring, we're hunting turkey.
This is actually going to be the first time I have ever hired an outfitter and taken a guided hunt. I could have gone public, but I took a look at their hunting unit system, and with limited time to do any research on where to go, I figured a guided hunt would be the way to go.
It will be worth it to me, hunting a mix of public and private areas, the guides will have birds scouted, and it will give me a really good chance at getting nice footage of a turkey hunt on video.

It sounds like a you have a great hunt set up. Coloardo is beautiful. I shot a mule deer buck and an antelope doe in Wyoming last fall. You'll have a blast out there. Make sure to post and let us know how you do.

Sorry, just wanted to try to generate some discussion on the site. I didn't mean to offend anyone.

Oh, I'm sure nobody is going to take offense. It has been kind of slow around here, being the off season and all.
