One Eye or Two Empty One Eye or Two

Post by Parkersdad Tue Apr 09, 2013 9:47 pm

I have always shot a bow with one eye closed. I got a tip from a friend that said why don't you shoot with both eyes open, it gives you a better field of view. I tried it for a month and I did not shoot well. I went back to one eye tonight and my groups tightened considerably. Do you guys shoot with one eye or two?

Both eyes with a traditional bow & one eyed with a compound unless it's low light. You may not have a dominate eye or you maybe cross dominate, which would cause your shooting to be not as accurate using both eyes.

I cannot shoot well at all with both eyes open when I use my compound, but when I am shooting my recurve I keep both eyes open. Shooting instinctively kinda requires both eyes to be open for the added depth perception.

This is caused by and called cross eye dominance. It is fairly common. With both eyes open, trying to focus on an object as close as a pin site while still trying to focus downrange causes the left, or weaker eye to overcompensate. I shoot with one eye closed as well. If I try to shoot with both eyes open, I will see two sets of pins, almost like double vision. It can cause me to shoot the wrong pin tip, and wind up shooting off.

Try this test. Close your left eye. Hold your thumb up at arms length, and cover up an object at a distance, like a light switch. Now, open both eyes. Do you see double thumbs, or does the object you are covering seem to be on both sides of your thumb? Now close your right eye. Does your thumb jump far off to one side?

If so, you probably have cross eye dominance. You should shoot with one eye closed.

That is a great perspective. I did your test and nothing happens so I should be able to shoot both eyes open. I did last night and had great groups. I guess it just takes some getting used to.

I am now shooting both eyes open exclusively and love it. I like having the wider field of view in case more deer are around.

I am left eye dominant but shoot right handed. Had a severe case of target panic several years ago and couldn't shake it so I sold my right handed bow and bought a left handed bow. Shot that a few years but still had the target panic. Swapped back to a right handed bow with my next one and someone told me to start shooting with both eyes open. My problem was I was trying to look around the peep right after the shot to see my arrow. I tried that and was able to shake the target panic. My groups were a little erratic at first but after a couple of weeks I was grouping better than ever. With both eyes open you have a lot better depth perception and also can see a lot more of the smaller limbs that can deflect your arrows.

Both eyes shut - I like the challenge. Twisted Evil

Actually both eyes open and all I have is a longbow - and yes I am cross-eye dominant.

I started one summer shooting a compound with both eyes open. Seemed like I shot better, but come season I missed high left on the sweetest shot I ever had on my first deer opportunity ever on public land. I swore my sight was off, but it turns out like slowbow said I have cross eye dominance . In a hunting situation I for some reason focus on the wrong set of pins.

I still do it sometimes. I'm always telling myself to keep that eye closed when the deer show up but sometimes I forget! Wish I never started shooting with two eyes open!
