Ever Had one STOLEN? Empty Ever Had one STOLEN?

Post by SlowBow Wed Jun 12, 2013 9:35 pm

Just curious if anyone has ever had a kill stolen. I know it happens. I can't say for sure that I have. One spike I let lay overnight after a poor hit and a spotty trail from 10 am until dark led to a gut pile the next morning. I don't know for sure if it was found dead or another hunter hit the wounded deer and claimed it. I also made a very good hit on a doe that ran towards the road. After 20 minutes I climbed down, and followed a heavy trail until I was about 50 yards from the roadway where the blood just stopped and I watched a truck spit gravel and head down the road. Pretty sure that one was taken.

A fellow I know had a nice 8 point down, gutted, and tagged, and it was gone when he came back with his buddy and hand truck.

Anyone else have problems with deer being taken or stolen while bowhunting?

I shot a decent 8pt. one evening. Let him lay overnight went to look for him after dropping the boys off at school. Found him with his head cut off at 8:30 am the next morning. Learned a lesson that day. If it happens again the boys will be late for class!

I can't wrap my mind around why anyone would want to steal a deer. Are you that desperate for venison? The whole reason we hunt is for the memories and fun. That's the only real value of the deer. You can't tell me that if a hunter sold all his gear and got a part-time job instead of sitting in the woods all day he couldn't buy more meat in a grocery store than he could ever get from many deer. Like Ted Nugent says, by the time you total up the cost of hunting it's the most expensive meat you'll ever eat!
So, I guess needing meat isn't a reason. Jealousy maybe? Spite perhaps? I really don't get why people do this.

Probably the same reason people poach. Ego, gotta get a deer instead of a ribbing from their friends? who knows. I don't think folks that don't do this will ever be able to really understand why someone would.

probably venison is the EXACT reason someone would steal someone's deer. They didnt have to spend thousands on equipment and hundreds of hours to obtain it. They just take it. There has always been theifs and there always will......till Christ returns Smile

My first buck was stolen. I shot him about 10am and went in for some lunch. I got a couple fellas to help me and went back out early afternoon. Followed the blood trail to where he was drug out.

I've never had a deer stolen but I did have a 7pt shoulder mount stolen from my camp.
Why would someone want another persons mount?
