Instinctive Shooting/Hunting with a Modern-Day Compound

Hey guys...
the topic says it all. Anyone hunt this way? I did for years but then I got suckered into the whole line of thinking I needed to shoot quarter-sized groups at 50 yds. But what i realize now is that I may shoot better with sights, I HUNT better without them. I actually missed a few deer because I was counting pins or whatever to make sure I used the correct one for the yardage of the shot. And when I hunted by means of instinctive shooting I never wounded a single deer, all were great kill shots. I even shot my first deer this way when I was 12. So I'm just wondering if anyone else hunts this way with their new compound and if so, what other things do you imploy? I'll be using a simple whisker Biscuit rest and a hip quiver. I do shoot with a release with my compound but no kisser, peep or sights.

a single pin ranged at a shorter distance is the solution I chose.

I actually did do that for about half the season this year. But for me honestly I still prefer the instinctive shooting. I do prefer the single pin to a multi pin, but my personal choice is still instinctive shooting. It's hard to explain but when I shoot instinctive its more like I'm just "looking" at the deer rather than "aiming" It's just a better fit for me. I may not score the 12 ring everytime I shoot the target, but I always make a kill shot on a real animal

When compounds first came out ( and were much longer than today) I shot for many yrs. with fingers and no sights. Used to shoot a lot of tournament archery that way and shot very well.

Eventually I went to one pin, then a release and then a peep...but never used more than one pin, my brains too slow for the multiple pins.

I went back to recurves only a few yrs ago..just never liked the release and hated the peep..couldn't see good enough with my old eyes when trying to aim at a spot on brown deer early and late in the day.

Yeah the peep is definitely not for me either. Not because I can't see thru it but it just makes me feel like I have to "add a step" to the whole shot process. I do however use a release because for one thing, it helps me maintain a more consistent hold/release of the string. I have certain medical issues that effect my grip, not so much the holding but the letting go. And secondly, I was finger shooting for awhile, but one time I had actually unknowingly de-nocked the arrow from the string inside my fingers while at full draw. So then when I let loose the string to shoot, WHAM! instant dry fire. Amazingly my Mathews Reezen was completely fine, even had my pro shop check it over. What a great display of quality for Mathews bows, but not something I wanted to do again. So, I went back to my release but still kept instinctive shooting.
