Well its almost that time fellas! I'm sure some of you have already started but here in Texas we are about 2 weeks away from opening day of bow season. I would like to hear your strategy this year and your approach and setup. Any goals? It's been quiet on here for some time, thought I might stir it up a bit. Dave how have you been, are you still a public land junkie? LOL.

My strategy this year is to get on the acorns or some sort of hot food source. I will be hunting from the ground in a blind so I need to be close, and trails are out in that kind of setup so I'm looking for some fresh food sources for the deer. I will be toting my recurve again this year, as I am still shooting for my first Trad kill. Hope everyone is doing well.

2016-2017 bow season Empty Re: 2016-2017 bow season

My season opens 10/1/16 and I will be high above the ground perched in my climber with my PSE and over looking a huge acorn area on the local public land. My brother and I have been out scouting several times and the tracks in the area are becoming more and more tuned to specific trails. We started our scouting at home using the Huntstand website and app. We looked at all the different overlay maps and basically dropped out first stand marker right in middle of a well used travel route. We are hoping to see a buck or two. We have a total of 20-25 different stand locations we have checked out for different wind directions. Though we know some may already be in use by other hunters and totally respect that and agreed that it is out of the question to step on the toes of a fellow hunter even if it means losing out on a freezer filler. We will be heading out one last time before season opens to hang a couple day time drippers to see if we can keep them coming in. We dropped some C'mere Deer and it either got seriously rained on or someone found it and soaked it themselves, either way it was a bust for the C'mere Deer. Confidence is key no matter what.

update on my bowseason as it is winding down. This was the year of "almost". Acorns were dropping mid October this year, which made it tough early on. Mid October I pulled out my compound and shot and missed at two does at 30 yards(bummer). Decided to pick the recurve back up. Last weekend of October I found a hot spot where the deer were tearing up the acorns in an oak flat. Got in early and had a legal buck come in at 10 yards feeding on acorns. Had a perfect wind, so I took my time for a good broadside shot. Settled in and let the arrow fly, and BAAM!!! Very loud noise I had never heard before, and my heart sank as I saw the arrow fly over his back, and watched him trot out of my life! Took a look at my bow and realized my string had broke just under the serving!!! I couln't believe it. I have never had one break, and talk about bad timing! Restrung and came back for an evening sit, but was busted by a doe as she got wind of me about 15 yards away. I was close, but no cigar. That is bowhunting.....

This season is starting out to be the year of disappointment. I made my annual trip to Missouri and ended up only coming home with a young doe for the freezer. Weather was unseasonable warm. I did stick a nice 130ish chocolate horned buck in the latter part of our time there. The hit, the blood trail and his reaction after the shot were all indications that I would have a short track job. After 4 heart breaking hrs of searching after I lost great blood and even included my hunting partners in on the search we never found him. This buck makes me question everything I thought I knew about killing deer. The rest of my season will be spent hunting Louisiana which is very tough to be conservative. Time to start planning my trip to Iowa next year....

I saw more deer than I've seen in a long time this season. I saw an 8 point, a bunch of little scrub bucks, and I shot a nine point with my bow on the mountain. I saw the biggest buck I've ever seen in my life as well and had him in 18 yards but could not get a shot it was so thick. I shot a doe as well. Can't wait till next year
