we have to earn our buck tags here so i shoot alot of does, but try to hold out for a good buck with my bow.

Since the county of Missouri I hunt allows unlimited antlerless tags to be filled . . . If it's brown, it's down!

The first one that gives me a shot each year gets it. Have to break in the year. After that I try to stay away from shooting yearlings and depending on the area I will try to keep the arrows nocked on small bucks.

Try = A self restraint that has a very high probability of not succeeding. It would be so much easier if they didn't taste so good!

i gotta agree with pig pen on this 1 gotta break in the year but after that i tryin hold out to beat my personal best wich is still a dink

Since my state allows one deer, be it doe or buck, and I've yet to get my first deer ever, if it's legal, I'll take it!

I'm a Meat Hunter and I hate that term "if it's brown..it's down" To Me it makes the person out to be a bad hunter and doesn't care for safety.. Words I well never live by... Plus DOE meat taste better..

I can see where the term sounds bad but, I only meant that if it is a doe or buck, I will try for either.

It all depends on my mood, But once the end of October hits Im passing all the doe I see and holding out for bucks.

Hard to put it in terms of the poll. My goals can change depending on what area I`m hunting,what video I`m trying to film,the condition of my freezer,time of year,the activity levels I`m seeing or expect to see based on weather conditions at the time,even my mood.

More often that not,any doe that gives me a shot is toast,unless the freezer is full,or I`m in an area where I expect a chance at a good buck.

Of course, if theres a big old doe with yearlings,sometimes they go on down through the woods,sometimes not.

I do try and let most bucks walk though.Thats not hard,since most of the bucks I run into on the heavily hunted areas around here are 18 months old. Now,if I spend lots of money on an out of state tag, that doesn`t seem to matter as much on a do it yourself hunt,but might on a trip to a quality area. If the freezer is hurting going in to the rut, I`m not about to let a spike walk either. 18 month old bucks eat real good.

So you can see, it would be hard to quantify an answer for this on based on the choices given.

I just dont knowingly shoot button bucks.

I chose monster bucks due to the limitations of the poll also part of the area i hunt is bucks only. I really am not looking for a major trophy but would be glad to take one. I try for a decent buck at least 2.5 years or older until the doe season comes in the northern counties then it's just about filing the freezer and trying to get close enough to them to touch them like the old Indian touching thing.

Much depends on my mood at the time of the hunt. For example, this year I was anxious for the season to get started and harvest some meat for the freezer, but I passed up an easy shot at a nice-sized doe because I was enjoying myself just watching nature wake up that morning...on another day that deer would have been taking a ride home in the truck, though.

LOL usually it's first clear shot I take it but this year I passed on my first deer that was a doe and never got the opportunity to shoot another doe. I did get a buck but also wanted a doe.

I take what i can. as long as I know that the shot is the most responcible shot i can take . buck or doe most of the time its 50/50.I have taken some nice bucks but it was being at the right place at the right time. and the creator wanted me to have them. sorry for the bad spelling.

I keep it to mature does , and I find my standards of bucks going up but believe me it does not have to be a pope and young by no means.I have shot some nice bucks, but I am just as tickled and pumped with a smaller caliber buck!!

Here in alabama we got blue gillions of does ( and bucks) but i focus on fillin my freezer first then when the pressure is off im good to pass on purty much every thing unless it has a pretty good rack. plus people will sometimes ask for a deer (oldfolks mostly) then ill killem a doe. Also I will NOT shoot a spike no matter how long he stays under my stand :)and far as that goes i dont even like to kill bucks under 3 1/2 ( even on public land) This is due to everbody in my family shootin the first thing they see. Drives me nuts!!!!. Plus i know first hand at what lettin deer grow will get you.
I know its public land, but i just cant do it. Ill kiill every doe i see as long as im not wastin the meat but i will not kill young bucks, public or private. But if it is somebody who has not ever killed a deer then im good with it, by all means shoot the first one thatwalks by:) This is me, and it is alabama, we can kill limitless does and three bucks. the hunters here dont understand the management part of that. this is one real good reason why alabama is not known for big deer.But its gettin better, starting to see more big deer killed. If we can just get the outlaws to follow the rules we'll be ok. This is fueled more or less by my love of this state and my stupid family runnin dogs on our property. They think its a sin to kill a doe but if it has the slightest horn on its head its dead( why i hunt public land) and they continue to complain " how come we dont see big deer" my answer " they dont grow if theyre dead". but im done, sorry for talkin so much.

I fill the freezer. I will pass up any healthy buck except for a true trophy. I have shot bucks that are ill/injured but honestly, I would rather leave them for someone else if they are in good shape.

meat man here fill the freezer 3 to 4 a year and hopefully 2 or 3 big birds.{turkeys}

we have a different formula for each property Blackbeard ANY deer or hog - Savannah River NWR ANY deer or hog - Jordan Lake GL rack bucks & does over 1 1/2 yrs old - WVBZ trophy buck & mature doe.

It really depends on where I'm hunting.  If I'm hunting the Midwest, I will typically shoot does first then hunt for a "trophy" buck.  In Louisiana, in early season, I take the first legal shootable deer then I will typically hunt for a particular buck that I may have located.  But generally I just continue to shoot what is available as the opportunity at a good quality buck here on public land is very rare.
