Just bought a trail cam, and I'm wondering where it should be placed. Are there certain things in hunting areas that should be focused on?

On private land, I'll put them on a bait pile or mineral lick to get a good idea of the animals using the area, and the times they visit.

Same thing applies on public land sans bait and salt. You can discover movement times and activity levels. I'd place it on obvious game trails, creek crossings, trails onto feeding fields, and trails into suspect bedding areas. Maybe along a good rub line,or at a scrape in the fall to see when and what kind of buck is visiting it.

If your areas are hammered like some of the ones that I hunt though, get a lock for it and be ready to loose it to a theif. It's a shame, but thats the way things are.

Thanks guys. There is this 103 acre plot on the Illinois stateline with Wisconsin. I know the deer are there, but usually there are only one or two deer harvested there per year. Half wetland, half forest.
