Re: Tips for ‘hung-up’ gobblers
Good article. I've got to x10 on the DON'T call to a bird on the roost, especially on public land. That bird will sit on that limb all day and gobble. I've personally worked birds on a roost in my younger days with calling at daybreak. They gobbled well but would not come in, I finally moved in at a quarter to quitting time (11:45) and found the bird still in the tree waiting for the hen to come to him.
Let the birds fly down first.
Another trick I've learned is to walk AWAY from the gobbler while calling. Sometimes this will cause him to break from his strutting spot and follow, and once he's moving in your direction he's less likely to hang up again, and a much easier bird to kill.

Just stick with it Uncle Bob. The birds will frustrate you to no end week after week, then one day you'll go out and give one cluck and the biggest baddest gobbler in the woods will commit suicide by charging you at a full dead run. Sometimes I think they are smart, sometimes I think they are just stupid. I called in a bird and missed at about 30 yards a few years ago, cussed OUT LOUD right after I shot and the bird flew off. Stood up,turned to walk away, and theres a mature gobbler at full strut not 20 yards behind me that had never gobbled. I was so shocked I forgot to shoot him as he turned and ran off.

I totally agree with SlowBow about walking away and calling. That tactic works well with a hunting partner. Once I hear the first set of gobbles, I wait for about 10 minutes to make my move. Waiting gives me time to see if others in the area will gobble as well! If I hear nothing, then I move closer if need be or stay put. Once in place I will give out a few soft tree yelps and that's it until daylight. While sitting there just listen!!! Listen for wings and ect.
Once the bird is on the ground, call every 5 to 10 minutes. Make that thunder chicken think you are hung up on something. That has worked in the past for me and still does!!! Good luck and happy hunting!!!
