This year has been tough so far
We are in our fourth week of bow hunting here in North Carolina and it took me four Saturday's to finally see a deer. I only get to Hunt Saturdays except for my vacation week. Most of the time I see deer every Saturday. This year has been a little different for me. I did finally see four deer yesterday. I walked back and sat 30 yards from their bedding area. I saw deer from 4:20 on. I usually don't have to get close to the bedding areas until the rifle season opens. We had tornadoes over the summer that really tore up some of our woods. I think this may have some to do with it. Just remember when your season opens if you're not seeing the deer head into the bedding area. You may have to do so earlier this year.

Re: This year has been tough so far
Lots of things can affect deer movement. Last year was fairly poor around here. Lots of guys said it was because of the massive mast crop, every oak in the woods dropped a bumper crop. Acorns everywhere, and deer didn't need to go far to find them. One thing is for sure. If your not seeing deer, a quick re-scout of the area is in order, and get on top of the freshest sign you can find.

Starting a little slow here also. One week in and this morning was the first I got within range. No shot, but Ill be back. All this after doing a re-scout. Pattern seemed to change within the last month. Probably spooked them myself.

Same here. Aside from one spike I could not shoot second morning, 5 full days now not even seeing a deer other than 2 I jumped while scouting. Sat on fresh sign, nothing. I might just be taking next weekend off so I don't burn out and wait for colder weather. Gonna be hard staying home so not sure yet.. Wish i lived even 30 mins from the woods, that would be great.

I think I am just starting too early in Big woods. Most of the deer down I hear about are farm/suburban deer. Easier to pattern than a big woods deer in early season. I think I may just skip the first 2-3 weekends next year and wait for later October before starting. I realized the pattern is I hardly see deer until some chasing starts.
